Change the Air Foundation is thrilled to announce a momentous public policy achievement that the Foundation and our Illinois volunteers spearheaded with the unanimous, bipartisan passage of SB 1087, The Mold Remediation Registration Act, into law. This landmark legislation marks a major step forward in protecting the citizens of Illinois from the dangers of mold exposure in water-damaged buildings.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Senator Jil Tracy (R), Representative Nabeela Syed (D), Representative Kevin Schmidt (R) and Representative Randy Frese (R) for their unwavering support and leadership in championing this crucial indoor air quality legislation. Their dedication to public health and safety has been instrumental in the unanimous passage of SB 1087.

“We are asking state government to publicly address the importance of professional mold remediation to safeguard the health and well-being of Illinoisans,” Senator Tracy said. “It is important to have certified individuals to identify and properly manage indoor conditions that might prompt mold growth, as well as review state building codes to ensure they adequately deal with the issue.”

Key provisions of the bill include the requirement for all mold remediators in Illinois to obtain active third-party mold remediation certification and register with the state. This measure helps ensure that only qualified and properly trained professionals handle mold remediation, significantly enhancing the safety and well-being of our communities.

Additionally, SB 1087 mandates the Department of Public Health to establish a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate the public about the significant threats posed by mold and water damage in indoor environments, emphasizing the importance of proper inspection and remediation to safeguard health.

We also wish to express our sincere appreciation to our dedicated Illinois policy volunteers—Patrick Lee, Ryan Schnack, and Daniel Khwaja—whose tireless efforts have been vital in advocating for this legislation. Furthermore, we thank the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) for their invaluable advocacy alliance with Change the Air Foundation in pushing this bill forward successfully. We look forward to continuing to work together in other states across the country.

Finally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all our supporters. Your generosity and commitment enable us to continue fighting for awareness and public health protections against the hidden epidemic of mold on your behalf. Together, we are making a profound impact on the health and safety of our communities.
